MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Emergency warming centers are being opened in Muncie as temperatures plunge below freezing.
The (Muncie) Star Press reports that the city announced Tuesday that seven fire stations and City Hall will be available for people without shelter.
The National Weather Service reported that the temperature was about 9 degrees about 9 a.m. Tuesday in the Muncie area.
Frigid weather has settled over parts of the Midwest and into the northeastern United States.
Wind chill advisories or warnings are in effect for all of North Dakota and Wisconsin, as well as swaths of South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan and Indiana.
Wind chill advisories are also in effect for parts of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and New York. Meteorologists say frostbite is possible with as little as 30 minutes of exposure.
