CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire authorities are reminding outdoor enthusiasts to be careful on the ice.

The Fish and Game Department says with uneven temperatures, some areas may look deceptively safe. Ice can be thick, but not strong if warmer weather breaks down the ice and then the slushy surface re-freezes.

The U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Lab in Hanover says there should be at least six inches of hard ice before traveling over ice by food and eight to 10 inches of hard ice for snow machines or all-terrain vehicles.
