PONTOTOC, Miss. (AP) - Voters in one northeast Mississippi school district are rejecting borrowing to upgrade school facilities.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that more than 70 percent of voters in the Pontotoc city school district voted against the plan to borrow $11.75 million.

Repaying the borrowing would have caused a property tax increase.

School officials had planned to spend the money on renovations at the district’s five schools as well as upgrades at the football stadium.

Since 2011, voters in at least 15 school districts statewide have approved bond issues, while voters in four others rejected bonds, according to Mississippi Department of Education records.
