IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) - The Idaho National Laboratory received high ratings and earned 97 percent of its total available fee, according to federal officials in a recent performance evaluation.
The U.S. Department of Energy determined the overall earned fee for the facility in Idaho Falls to be $15.52 million for the 2017 fiscal year, the Post Register reported .
In the letter sent late last month to lab director Mark Peters, Fee Determination Official Richard Provencher praised the lab’s operations.
The nuclear research lab has produced “high quality, original and creative results that advanced science, engineering and technology across the laboratory research and development portfolio,” Provencher said in the letter, noting the lab’s role in boosting and expanding nuclear power.
The facility was evaluated in categories that ranged from effectiveness and efficiency to health and safety. Each objective examined was given a letter grade. The lowest grade the facility received on a single objective was a B minus.
The evaluation did note some areas of improvement, which included work planning and execution as well as integration of experiments in a specific part of the facility.
Battelle Energy Alliance LLC has operated the facility under a federal contract since 2005. The contract expires in 2024.
