AMESBURY, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts man who beat another man with his own metal cane has been sentenced to 18 months in jail after pleading guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

The Newburyport Daily News reports that 24-year-old Jordan Metherall’s plea also covers his attack on the man who attempted to help the victim.

Police say the 47-year-old victim was smoking outside an Amesbury apartment on Aug. 27 when he was approached by Metherall, who started punching the victim in the face before grabbing the cane and hitting him on the head. He was treated at the hospital.

Metherall, of Haverhill, ran away but was found hiding nearby. Police say he appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and said the victims had started the fight.
