COLCHESTER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont officials say the federal tax overhaul could lead to some significant changes in the state tax code.
Democratic Rep. Janet Ancel tells Vermont Public Radio she doesn’t know what the changes would be. But as the chairwoman of the House Committee on Ways and Means, she says they could be spending most of next year figuring them out.
Ancel says one issue is the federal standard deduction figure, which could be increased. She says lawmakers might also explore other options for public education funding if the property tax rate increases.
Ancel says she doesn’t want the state tax system to be any less progressive than it currently is. The state currently relies on a structure that has people with higher incomes pay more in state taxes.
