BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - University of California Berkeley’s former Chancellor Nicholas Dirks will continue to be paid by the university for another year despite stepping down this summer.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported https://bit.ly/2wIxzLY ) Tuesday that the continued payment is because of a policy that rewards executives who are also tenured professors and will return to the classroom. Dirks will earn $434,000, although he won’t be teaching or running campus programs.
University spokeswoman Dianne Klein says the policy’s purpose “is to allow top-flight academics to get back up to speed in their field and begin research, which they weren’t able to do while in their administrative role.”
Dirks, a historian who has written books about India, plans to begin teaching at Berkeley a year from now.
