SAN ANTONIO (AP) - The Bexar (bayr) County sheriff says a deputy is under arrest for collecting drug debts on behalf of a county inmate and then forwarding the money to the incarcerated man.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said during a news conference Wednesday that deputy Rita Alvarez is facing charges that include engaging in criminal activity.

Alvarez, who has worked for the sheriff’s office since 2006, has been placed on unpaid leave and Salazar says she’ll likely be fired.

She was most recently assigned to the Bexar County Adult Detention Center.

Salazar says the inmate also is facing charges and added that investigators are still trying to determine the relationship between Alvarez and the inmate.
