OAK LAWN, Ill. (AP) - The National Weather Service is seeking personal stories and photographs chronicling a deadly tornado outbreak that struck the Chicago area fifty years ago.

Weather officials say they will use the accounts on social media and the service’s website to remember the disaster.

Three high-powered tornadoes tore across northeastern Illinois on April 21, 1967, killing 58 people and injuring more than 1,000 people. Weather officials say it was the Chicago area’s worst tornado disaster. The suburb of Oak Lawn was hit particularly hard.
