Big-budget Hollywood director Joss Whedon told his fans on Thursday that President Donald Trump’s administration may kill gay men in a Chechen-like purge.
The man behind Marvel Studios’ “Avengers” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” shared news of alleged human rights violations in Chechnya before warning of similar atrocities headed for American shores. In response to reports that 100 gay men were detained — in addition to extrajudicial killings — Mr. Whedon said only “resistance” could stop the White House from similar deeds.
“This is harrowing, and it’s where we’re headed if we don’t unite and act. Please use your #resistance skills to address this atrocity,” Mr. Whedon said.
Mr. Whedon, who is in talks to direct a “Batgirl” film for DC and Warner Bros., has been a long-time critic of Mr. Trump. He launched a star-studded pro-Hillary Clinton super PAC called Save The Day during the 2016 presidential election, and when that failed he turned to coup-like rhetoric.
“This is simple: Trump cannot CANNOT be allowed a term in office. It’s not about 2018. It’s about RIGHT NOW,” Mr. Whedon tweeted Nov. 14.
Thursday’s latest effort to fuel a “resistance” movement was met with dozens of negative responses.
“It’s exactly where we’re headed,” responded one user with an image of Mr. Trump holding up a rainbow LGBT flag.
“What an irresponsible statement to make. It is in NO WAY happening here,” added another.
