RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Dominion Virginia Power says it will conduct further assessments of coal ash ponds at four sites before seeking long-term closure permits from the state.
Dominion Chairman, President and CEO Thomas Farrell II sent a letter this week to Gov. Terry McAuliffe outlining the company’s plans. The letter comes after the governor proposed amendments to a coal ash pond closure bill last month to require such assessments.
Lawmakers are set to consider those amendments Wednesday. But Farrell wrote that the company thinks the assessments would be “prudent” and will proceed with them regardless of what happens to the bill.
The measure requires site assessments by Dec. 1 that describe any water pollution, evaluate clean closure options including recycling or the use of a lined landfill, and demonstrate long-term safety.
