BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A Birmingham lawyer has been accused of misappropriating federal funds meant for a volunteer legal program.

Acting U.S. Attorney of the Middle District of Tennessee Jack Smith said in a statement that 48-year-old Kelli Hogue Mauro was charged with misapplication of property worth at least $5,000 from a federal program.

Charges say Mauro, the former Executive Director of the Birmingham Volunteer Lawyers Program, misappropriated property owned by the group, which has received benefits in excess of $10,000 from grants by the federal Legal Services Corporation.

The case was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama by the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee. The statement says the Tennessee office will handle the case to avoid any impartiality.

It’s unclear if Mauro has an attorney.
