DURANGO, Colo. (AP) - The owner of an inactive gold mine in southwestern Colorado is asking a court to remove more than half the 48 sites from a Superfund cleanup area established after a massive wastewater spill from another mine.
The Durango Herald reported Friday (https://bit.ly/2oy5Usi ) that Sunnyside Gold Corp. filed a petition in federal court saying 27 of the sites weren’t tested before they were included.
The Environmental Protection Agency established the Superfund site after the agency inadvertently triggered a 3-million-gallon spill from the Gold King Mine, which is part of the cleanup.
The EPA has said 19 of the sites have been tested and the others will be investigated this year.
Sunnyside doesn’t own the Gold King. The company says it doesn’t object to the Superfund listing, but only the way sites were reviewed.
