BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The University of Vermont says police know who stole a Black Lives Matter flag that had been flying on campus last fall.

School officials said it could not reveal the identity of the person, who was enrolled as a student at the time.

The school said campus police, in consultation with the attorney general’s office, referred the case to the school’s Center for Student Conduct.

The student newspaper The Vermont Cynic first reported the thief had been identified.

The flag was sponsored by the Student Government Association to show support for the school community as many struggle with violence and seek justice. The group said the theft underscored why the country needs to openly discuss the injustices many Americans face based on the color of their skin.
