CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - A bronze statue of a little girl chasing butterflies has been reinstalled at a Cape Girardeau park after being vandalized.

The Southeast Missourian (https://bit.ly/2oXt0xi ) reports that the statue of Melaina was stolen in January from Melaina’s Magical Playland in Cape County Park North. After police were able to recover it, donations poured in to replace the vandalized statue.

The statue was made in memory of 3-year-old Melaina Cunningham, who died after battling muscular dystrophy. The memorial playground is designed for children to enjoy regardless of physical disabilities.

Jeff Cunningham, the child’s father, says lights and security cameras are in place at the park.

Sgt. Adam Glueck said Tuesday that the two teenagers in connection to the statue’s damage were cited into juvenile court in January.
