Convicted rapist and former Stanford University swimmer Brock Turner officially registered Tuesday as a sex offender in his Ohio hometown, but he was not alone as he reported to the sheriff’s office to sign the paperwork.
Accompanied by his parents, Turner’s mother, Carleen Turner, used her white sweater in an attempt to block her son’s face from reporters and cameramen inside the Greene County Sheriff’s Office in Bellbrook, NBC News’ Bay Area affiliate reported Tuesday.
Turner, 21, who was convicted of a January 2015 sexual assault in California, made headlines in June when Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky sentenced him to 6 months in prison, though he faced as much as 14 years. He was released Friday after serving only half the original sentence.
The leniency of the sentence caused a national uproar, with the backlash ultimately resulting in the judge removing himself from handling criminal cases.
In Ohio, Turner’s residence has been the scene of protests, some by armed demonstrators. Ohio is an open-carry state.
The armed protesters told the NBC affiliate that they’re not out to hurt Turner, but their demonstrations are a way to keep him “on edge.”
