CONWAY, Ark. (AP) - A former state senator in Arkansas has pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and refusing to take a breath test.

Former Sen. Gilbert Baker was sentenced Tuesday to serve 24 hours in jail and pay $1,225 in fines and court costs.

A police report says Baker was “verbally belligerent and emotional” when he was arrested last month after a traffic stop in Conway. In a statement released by his attorney, Baker apologized and said he will accept responsibility for his actions.

Baker served as a Republican state senator from 2001 to 2013. He unsuccessfully ran for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate in 2010.
