PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A developer has requested a zoning change for Peaks Island in Portland that would make way for at least a dozen condominiums.

The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2drFits ) the proposal from Kevin Carter for a property on the island is a sign that the city’s housing crunch may spread to the offshore community of mostly single-family homes.

The project details aren’t clear, but the zoning change Carter is seeking could result in one of the tallest, densest developments on the island. He says it creates an opportunity to create affordable housing in and around the Portland area.

But some residents worry that the project would compromise views of Casco Bay, demolish what was once a beloved bowling alley and open the door for undesired development.
