GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) - A western Pennsylvania man charged in the shooting death of a police officer responding to a domestic dispute won’t stand trial until next year.
The (Johnstown) Tribune-Democrat (https://bit.ly/2cTcyEO ) reports that a Westmoreland County judge has granted the defense of Ray Shetler Jr. more time to prepare motions for the case. Shetler’s lawyer has until Oct. 18 to submit pretrial motions.
The move set the current trial date for the January term of court.
Shetler, of New Florence, is charged with first-degree murder in the Nov. 28 death of St. Clair Township Officer Lloyd Reed.
Shelter has acknowledged shooting Reed, who responded to a 911 call made by Shetler’s girlfriend. But Shetler contends that he didn’t realize Reed was an officer and fired in self-defense after Reed fired at him first.
