The 24-year-old pitcher died Sunday when his boat crashed into a jetty off Miami Beach. Eduardo Rivero, 25, and Emilio Macias, 26, were also killed in the crash.
The bag was found 20 miles north of the crash site. A beachgoer turned in the bag to a lifeguard on duty, and the bag was turned over to authorities.
Ocean Rescue Division Chief Vincent Canosa confirmed that the baseballs were signed by Fernandez and the checkbook belonged to the deceased pitcher.
