Minutes after Donald Trump admitted President Obama was born in the U.S., Hillary Clinton on Friday lashed out on Twitter and said her opponent is guilty of peddling a “racist conspiracy” about the president.

“Trump has spent years peddling a racist conspiracy aimed at undermining the first African American president. He can’t just take it back,” the former first lady and Democratic presidential nominee tweeted. “The birther lie is what turned Trump from an ordinary reality TV star into a political figure … What Trump should do: for once in his life, own up to his mistakes. Apologize to the president, and to the American people.”

At a press conference Friday, the Republican billionaire acknowledged Mr. Obama was born in Hawaii. He pinned the blame for the so-called “birther” controversy on Mrs. Clinton’s 2008 White House campaign, saying Clinton supporters originated quiet rumblings about the president’s true birthplace.

Mrs. Clinton vehemently denied that characterization.

“What Trump just did is a disgrace,” she tweeted.
