A New York City policeman was stabbed and his attacker killed in a rush-hour altercation Thursday outside two of New York’s most-iconic venues — Madison Square Garden and Penn Station.
Citing eyewitnesses and initial police reports, the New York Daily News reported that several officers responded to a call about a man running around with a butcher’s knife on W. 32nd Street between Seventh Avenue and Broadway.
“He was running down the street waving it,” a Metro Transportation Authority worker told the Daily News on condition of anonymity. “The cops were chasing him.”
Even when surrounded by police and repeatedly told to drop the knife, the suspect refused, according to witnesses. When an officer went to take the knife, the suspect sliced at the cop and left him with a deep gash.
The police then shot the suspect repeatedly, killing him, according to WCBS. The attacker was not immediately named.
“They shot him up,” the witness told the Daily News. “He was hit five or six times. He was laid up on the sidewalk.”
The officer who suffered a stab wound was taken to Bellevue Hospital. Another officer suffered a graze woundon his back and also was taken there, though it wasn’t immediately clear whether the latter man’s injury came from the attacker’s cleaver or a police bullet.
