Police have reportedly identified the man who attacked a group of police with a meat cleaver Thursday afternoon as Akram Joudeh.
The New York Daily News, citing “a police source” said Joudeh stabbed an off-duty detective in the head during a chaotic altercation just outside Penn Station and Madison Square Garden at the start of Thursday’s rush hour.
According to the Daily News, citing eyewitnesses and initial police reports, a man with a scruffy beard and wearing sandals, later identified as Joudeh, run around the iconic Midtown Manhattan block wielding the butcher knife before police were called.
Joudeh was shot dead when he refused to drop the knife and attacked the officers instead.
Other New York media reports described the suspect as mentally disturbed.
