PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Islanders are marking the Columbus Day holiday weekend with festivals, parades and a day off from school.

In Providence, the city’s Federal Hill neighborhood hosts its annual Columbus Day Festival from Saturday morning until Monday evening.

Its Columbus Day parade takes place starting Sunday at 11 a.m. along Atwells Avenue.

Newport hosts its annual Columbus Day parade on Monday, starting at noon in front of City Hall. The parade winds its way through the city, ending at Bellevue Avenue.

Monday is a federal and state holiday, so schools are closed, as are government offices and many businesses.
