SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) - A horse track in Scarborough plans to close its horse barn by the end of the month because of an ongoing problem with water contamination caused by horse manure.

The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2dKyDJe ) Scarborough Downs spokesman Mike Sweeney said Thursday an analysis by the Environmental Protection Agency showed there was a seepage of nutrients from the manure into the groundwater.

The extent of the contamination and whether it might affect neighboring properties is unclear.

Town Manager Tom Hall says he’s not aware of any complaints from neighbors. An EPA official says he’s not certain what role the agency played.

Sweeney says the barn closure won’t affect the track’s fall racing schedule. Horses will be brought in on the day of their races and then returned to their home stables.
