HONOLULU (AP) - President Barack Obama is declaring a disaster after flooding and mudslides inflicted heavy damage on Maui last month.

The White House said in a statement Thursday federal funding is available to state and local governments for emergency work and the repair or replacement of damaged facilities. Some nonprofit organizations would also be eligible for the funding.

The statement says the funding will supplement state and local recovery efforts.

The state and Maui County have already issued disaster declarations for last month’s heavy rains.

Storms, flooding, landslides and mudslides hit Maui from Sept. 11 through 14.

Flooding in Iao Valley knocked out a waterline, flooded several homes with mud and debris and destroyed a significant portion of the county’s Kepaniwai Park parking lot.
