AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Austin police Chief Art Acevedo (ah-seh-VAY’-doh) says he’ll suspend and possibly fire any police supervisor who fails to report all complaints against officers to internal affairs.
The Austin American-Statesman (https://atxne.ws/2eVtHhF ) reports Wednesday’s announcement came after an audit of police complaints.
That review found several police supervisors violated policy by not forwarding all complaints made against officers to the department’s Internal Affairs unit for more investigation.
Acevedo’s action comes as Austin police face criticism over several use-of-force incidents, including the 2015 arrest of a black teacher who was thrown to the ground by one white office and the February fatal shooting of an unarmed, naked 17-year-old.
The newspaper reports Acevedo has intensified scrutiny of his command staff and middle management, criticizing them in a behind closed doors meeting in August.
