PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Concerned residents of Portland’s West End section say a new high-tech cold water storage facility proposed along the waterfront will ruin their scenic views.
The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2fcDZOA ) that although most new cold-storage facilities are 36 to 40 feet tall, Americold is seeking to build a structure at least 68 feet tall at the International Marine Terminal.
Americold officials say the company needs the clearance to reach the 15,800-pallet storage capacity needed to efficiently store refrigerated items. The city wants to raise the cap on building heights along the waterfront to accommodate their request.
Port officials stress that the facility is needed to support growth in the food and beverage, biomedical and pharmaceutical industries.
City calculations show the property is at least 500 feet from the nearest residence.
