GENESEO, N.Y. (AP) - The search is over for the perfect granite to repair a landmark fountain in western New York.
Geneseo Mayor Richard Hatheway tells WHEC-TV the village has found the stone it needs to repair its famous 128-year-old bear fountain. The granite is at a Connecticut quarry and will be shaped into the fountain’s new bowl.
Hatheway says the biggest challenge now is finding the right chunk of sandstone for the bear to sit on. If all goes as planned, the bear fountain will be back working next summer.
The iconic bear was knocked off its sandstone pedestal when a delivery truck hit the fountain’s granite base in April.
The bear, depicted hugging a light pole, has been a landmark on Geneseo’s Main Street since the late 1880s.
