BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved Louisiana’s request to extend the Transitional Sheltering Assistance program for those needing a place to live after August’s severe storms and floods.
The program allows those affected to stay in participating hotels temporarily if they cannot return home.
The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness said in a news release FEMA has been extended to Nov. 18. The previous deadline was Oct. 19.
The state requested the extension due to a lack of rental resources and because of significant, widespread damage to homes throughout Louisiana.
There are currently 2,426 households in the housing program checked into 261 hotels in 9 states.
The mid-August flooding killed 13 people and caused more than $8.7 billion in estimated damage.
