ATLANTA (AP) - Civil rights veteran Andrew Young and Atlanta Braves Hall of Famer Hank Aaron are urging people to vote against a constitutional amendment allowing the state to take over some Georgia schools.
Young and Aaron on Tuesday joined teacher and education groups opposing the proposed constitutional amendment on the November ballot.
The proposal, backed by Gov. Nathan Deal, would allow an appointed superintendent to select up to 20 schools after three consecutive years of low performance and make them into charters, close them or overhaul management.
Young says federal and state policies have most harmed schools serving students that are poor or disadvantaged, making teachers’ jobs more difficult. He says the amendment would minimize parent and community input.
The proposal’s backers say local officials have failed to improve schools for years.
