PURVIS, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi 589 near Burnt Bridge Road has reopened to motorists for the first time since the road was damaged by flooding in March.
The $976,417 project was completed by Tanner Construction of Laurel and included the repair of more than 1,500 feet of damaged roadway, as well as construction of a new 300-foot relief bridge. The road reopened Friday.
The Hattiesburg American (https://hatne.ws/2dWsDiE ) reports the area that was damaged covered about 1,900 feet of the northbound lane just north of Burnt Bridge Road. Of that, officials estimated about 300 feet of road was completely washed out by the water.
The new bridge, for which crews used precast components to expedite construction, will help prevent the accumulation of any future floodwaters.
