SEBEWAING, Mich. (AP) - Officials say a discharge from a storm sewer is believed to be the source of a spill that’s killed fish in the Sebewaing River.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality says cleanup crews were called this week to deal with the problem.
The Huron Daily Tribune reports dead fish were discovered at the Sebewaing Marina, where DEQ officials found oxygen levels below Michigan water quality standards. MLive.com reports a black, foul-smelling substance was determined to be the cause of the low oxygen levels
Michigan Sugar Co. says it’s investigating the cause of the release of the substance into the Sebewaing River.
The river flows into the Saginaw Bay. The company is a cooperative owned by sugar beet growers that makes Pioneer and Big Chief brand sugars.
