The Miami Marlins paid for pitcher Jose Fernandez’s funeral costs and made a donation to the church that hosted his public viewing and private funeral ceremony, the Sun Sentinel reported.

He was killed in a boating accident on Sept. 25 off the shores of Miami.

Fernandez, 24, was one of the MLB’s most promising rising stars. He recorded a 16-8 record this season, compiling 253 strike outs.

The boat crash is still actively being investigated by Miami authorities, the Sun Sentinel said.
