PHOENIX (AP) - The Latest on an Arizona trooper’s fatal shooting of an armed man after a freeway chase and collision (all times local):
8:40 a.m.
A north Phoenix freeway has reopened after being closed overnight following the fatal shooting of a driver by a state trooper.
Westbound Loop 101 reopened late Monday morning at Scottsdale Road after being closed for over nine hours as authorities investigated the incident near 56h Street.
A state Department of Public Safety spokesman says a trooper fatally shot an armed man after he failed to stop for a traffic violation, nearly ran over a trooper during a chase and then collided with several troopers’ patrol vehicles.
DPS spokesman Raul Garcia says the trooper shot the man when he was seen with a gun and perceived to be a threat to troopers.
6:20 a.m.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety says a trooper fatally shot an armed man after he failed to stop for a traffic violation, nearly ran over a trooper and then collided with several troopers’ patrol vehicles.
DPS spokesman Raul Garcia says the trooper shot the unidentified man at the scene of the collision on Loop 101 in north Phoenix late Sunday night.
Garcia says troopers began chasing the man after he wouldn’t pull over and that at one point he veered onto a dirt shoulder toward a trooper who was deploying tire-puncturing devices. The trooper hurt his ankle while jumping out of the way.
Garcia says the fatal shooting occurred later when the man’s vehicle struck several troopers’ vehicles and one of the troopers saw the man had a gun.
