Americans apparently are making plans to exit the country following a Donald Trump victory in the 2016 presidential election — and the Canadian government seems to be encouraging them.

The Canadian government’s immigration website crashed Tuesday night as the billionaire Republican moved closer to the 270 electoral votes he needs to claim the White House. The notion of moving to Canada in the event of a Trump presidency has become a popular refrain on social media, though it’s never been clear whether a mass exodus would materialize.

The Canadian government on Tuesday night seemed to appeal to Americans who may be looking for a new home nation.

“In Canada, immigrants are encouraged to bring their cultural traditions with them and share them with their fellow citizens,” the Canadian government tweeted from its official Twitter account Tuesday at 6 p.m., a note that was retweeted more than 35,000 times and liked more than 41,000 times.

Major media outlets this week, including Fortune magazine and USA Today, published articles explaining how Americans could emigrate to Canada. And earlier this year, the Canadian town of Cape Breton launched a public-relations effort appealing to U.S. citizens who may wish to move north to escape a Trump administration.

“Can you move to Cape Breton? Yes you can. And we would love to have you,” the town says on a web page titled, “Cape Breton if Donald Trump wins.”
