VERNON, Vt. (AP) - The owner of the shut-down Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant wants to sell the facility to a company that specializes in dismantling closed nuclear power plants.

Entergy Nuclear Vermont Yankee announced Tuesday it had reached a deal to sell the Vernon plant, which closed in 2014, to subsidiaries of Northstar Group Services. The sale must be approved by state and federal regulators.

Entergy says the sale will make it possible to begin dismantling the plant in 2021 and complete most site restoration by 2030. It had initially said that process couldn’t be completed until 2075.

Gov. Peter Shumlin says his administration has been pushing for an accelerated decommissioning schedule for the plant, but he says the state needs “an open and transparent” look at the financial capabilities of the buyer.
