CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The Equality State Policy Center and the American Civil Liberties Union are urging the Wyoming Secretary of State’s Office to discontinue requiring some people to provide proof of citizenship before allowing them to vote.
The two organizations say the practice is discriminatory and unconstitutional.
State Election Director Kai Schon says the state identified some people whose driver’s license data showed they were originally classified as non-residents, temporary aliens or resident aliens. Schon says that made it necessary to ask those people to show they are qualified to vote.
An advocate for Teton County’s Latino community says she knows of several people who received notice requiring them to provide proof of citizenship. Isabel Zumel one of them was so upset that she decided not to vote in the primary.
