MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Gov. Peter Shumlin says the annual process of enrolling existing and new customers on the Vermont Health Connect state insurance exchange is going smoothly.

Shumlin said Tuesday that more than 20,000 households have been re-enrolled in 2017 health and dental plans and about 1,000 new applicant households have received an eligibility determination since open enrollment started last month. It runs through Jan. 31.

Vermont Health Connect had been plagued with problems after its launch in 2013.

The Democratic governor says the time it takes to process customers’ reports of change of circumstances, like a new job, marriage or divorce has also improved.

As Republican President-elect Donald Trump promises to replace the so-called “Obamacare” health care law, Shumlin says tens of thousands of Vermonters now have health insurance because of it.
