Man found dead in burned apartment in western New York town

NEWFANE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a 54-year-old man has been found dead after an apartment fire in western New York.

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office says a 911 caller reported a fire around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday in an apartment in the town of Newfane, on Lake Ontario 30 miles northeast of Buffalo.

Deputies arrived to find the apartment filled with smoke, preventing them from entering. Firefighters from a local volunteer fire company extinguished the blaze.

Police say fire crews found James Marsh dead in an upstairs bedroom, where the blaze appeared to have started.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
