An elementary-school bus crash has killed “multiple” children and sent many more to the hospital, according to first responders in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
“Multiple fatalities are involved in this bus crash … [but] no firm numbers have been confirmed yet. #ChattFire” the Chattanooga Fire Department tweeted.
TV station WRCB reported, citing the local district attorney, that six children were killed.
According to Police Chief Fred Fletcher, 35 schoolchildren from Woodmore Elementary were on the bus Monday afternoon, and 23 were taken to area hospitals.
The accident was a single-vehicle crash on the 300 block of Talley Road and the driver is reportedly cooperating with authorities.
Photos from the scene showed the bus crashed into a home and had tipped over onto its side against a tree. According to TV station WATE, the woman who owns the house was unhurt and was with first-responders at the site.
