Controversial hip-hop star Kanye West was forcibly rushed to the hospital Monday afternoon in Los Angeles and is under psychiatric evaluation, according to the entertainment-news site TMZ
Citing “law enforcement-sources,” TMZ said Mr. West was taken to UCLA Medical Center around 1:20 p.m. after police responded to a call to check up on his welfare.
“Sources connected to Kanye tell us he was getting checked out by one of his doctors for severe sleep deprivation when someone — possibly the physician — decided he needed to be admitted,” TMZ wrote.
The site went on to report that Mr. West didn’t want to be hospitalized and had to be restrained and forcibly taken to the UCLA hospital.
The hospitalization came after several days of odd newsmaking by Mr. West.
He told concert fans in San Jose last week that while he didn’t vote, he would have voted for Donald Trump if he had. He also told his audience that black people needed to quit complaining about racism.
On Saturday, he cut a Sacramento concert short. On Sunday, he called off the Los Angeles concert just hours before its scheduled start. The rest of his smash-hit Saint Pablo concert tour was then cancelled.
In recent days, he asked that fellow hip-hop star Jay-Z not send his bevy of “killers” after him.
Mr. West has repeatedly insisted he will run for president in 2020.
