MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - An inmate has stabbed a corrections officer at a state prison in Bessemer.

The Alabama Department of Corrections says the stabbing happened early Wednesday morning at William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility. The officer was searching an inmate’s cell when he was assaulted with a makeshift knife.

The officer’s injuries are not life-threatening. He was treated at a nearby hospital for a head wound and defensive injuries to his hands.

The department said inmate Shawn Baker will be charged for attacking the officer. The 32-year-old is serving a life sentence for attempted murder. It is not immediately clear if he has an attorney.

The prison system has been the site of multiple incidents of violence.

Corrections Officer Kenneth Bettis died in September after being stabbed at William C. Holman Correctional Facility.
