OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - A 27-year-old male inmate has been found dead of an apparent suicide in the Lee County Detention Facility.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the unidentified man was found unresponsive Thursday morning inside the Opelika facility.

Authorities say the inmate appeared to have taken his own life by hanging himself with a sheet in the holding cell. No other inmates were in the cell at the time of the incident.

The inmate had been in the facility since Nov. 8 after being arrested by Opelika police on multiple charges, including first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping and second-degree domestic violence.

Sheriff’s deputies have turned the case over to the State Bureau of Investigation for further investigation.
