DENVER (AP) - Prosecutors have charged a Denver police officer with theft after authorities say his body camera captured him stealing $1,200 from a suspect at a crime scene.
The Denver district attorney’s office on Tuesday also charged 48-year-old Julian Archuleta with tampering with physical evidence and official misconduct.
Police reports say Archuleta’s body camera recorded him taking cash from a suspect’s clothing during a shooting investigation, including a $100 bill.
But investigators say a detective who collected the cash and logged it as evidence found no $100 bills. The detective reviewed Archuleta’s body camera footage and contacted internal affairs.
Archuleta has been released from jail on $2,000 bond. Court records don’t list an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
Archuleta, on the job since 2004, has been suspended without pay.
