A U.S. soldier was killed at a northern Iraqi base after it came under rocket fire early Saturday, according to multiple news reports.
“It was a lucky strike by ISIS,” an official told Fox News, using an acronym for the Islamic State terrorist group.
Two rockets hit the base, but one didn’t cause any damage or casualties, another defense official told USA Today.
The Pentagon is expected to make an announcement on the attack soon. The Defense Department confirmed a U.S. casualty, but did not give any details on the individual.
The soldier is the second American to be killed fighting the Islamic State since combat operations began in Aug. 2014.
In October, Delta Force Master Sgt. Joshuan Wheeler, 39 was killed in a raid that freed 70 hostages from an Islamic State prison in northern Iraq. He was the first soldier to die in combat in Iraq since 2011, when U.S. forces withdrew from the region after eight years of combat there.
