Trial dates were selected for the six Baltimore Police officers charged in connection with the death of Freddie Gray, with the first officer’s trial to commence in May.

The trial schedule was uncertain for months following the mistrial of Officer William Porter on assault and misconduct charges in December.

Officer Porter was expected to be called to testify against fellow officers on their roles in the death of Gray, who died in April one week after he sustained broken neck during a ride in the back of a police van following his arrest.

But with prosecutors seeking to retry Officer Porter, he challenged being forced to testify against the others before his own criminal case was resolved. He argued that being compelled to testify would violate his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination.

This month the Maryland Court of Appeals ruled against Officer Porter, deciding that he could be compelled to testify against the other officers, who face a range of charges including assault, misconduct and second-degree murder.

The trial dates will be formally approved Wednesday, but are expected to be scheduled as follows:

State of Maryland v. Edward Nero: May 10

State of Maryland v. Caesar Goodson: June 6
