3 Chicago police officers shot

Three Chicago police officers were shot Monday night after a drug-related chase that ended in a shootout that killed one of the suspects.

According to the Chicago Tribune, citing an unnamed police source, one of the officers was in serious-to-critical condition.

Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told reporters officially that the three officers sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.

Citing a Chicago PD spokesman, the Chicago Sun Times reported that the 11th District officers on a narcotics mission saw two males in the 3700 block of West Polk Street in the Homan Square neighborhood and gave chase into an apartment building courtyard.

“One of 2 suspects opened fire, hitting 3 officers. One officer returned fire, striking one of the 2, per CPD spox,” tweeted Sun Times crime reporter Sam Charles.

The hit suspect was dead at the scene. There was no immediate word on the other suspect.

The three officers, who were not immediately named, were shot in the back, in the foot, and in the chest while wearing a bulletproof vest, a police source told the Tribune.

A woman who didn’t want her name used but lives on the block where the shootings happened told the Sun Times that “she was watching TV when she heard about 15 gunshots” and then “dropped to the floor and turned off the lights.”

She said of the police response, that it was “a sea of blue lights.”
