A gunman was reported Tuesday evening near the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville, prompting an official warning to students.

The university told students in a tweet to avoid the Gordon Avenue area just north of campus.

An all-clear was announced on the school’s emergency alert system less than a half-hour after the initial warning.

Although there was no active threat, the university still advised students to stay away from the area because of a police investigation.
