The Washington Times, known for its hard-hitting investigative reporting and thorough coverage of politics and policy, announced that conservative commentator Mercedes “Mercy” Viana Schlapp, is joining The Washington Times (TWT) to write a weekly column on politics in America, appearing online every Friday at washingtontimes.com.

“Mercedes is a brilliant individual and one of the most admired political strategists today,” Times’ CEO and President Larry Beasley said. “Having someone with her well-rounded talents and expertise in the political arena join TWT is just another great addition to our already strong team.”

With over 20 years of notable experience, Mercedes joins a growing number of regular Times’ contributors, including former CIA director Mike Hayden, domestic policy expert Steve Moore, TV and radio show host Tammy Bruce, former political reporter Charles Hurt, Fox News personality Monica Crowley, and former chairman of ACU and former president of NRA David Keene.

“We are thrilled Mercedes is going to share her political experience and insight with our readers,” said Times’ Executive Editor Christopher Dolan. “Her thoughts and commentary are well respected in the political world and she has a very loyal base of followers.”

“I am honored to join such a talented team of reporters and contributors,” Mercedes Schlapp said. “Under the leadership of Larry Beasley and Chris Dolan, The Washington Times continues to expand its influence and reach to millions of Americans who want substantive news with solid reporting and commentary.”

A current FOX News contributor, an opinion writer, and co-founder of Cove Strategies, Mercedes has frequently appeared as a political commentator on MSNBC, PBS and CNN. A former contributor to U.S. News and World Report, she has also written for FOXNews.com, The Daily Caller and The Hill on a variety of topics including immigration, Hispanic and women issues as well as on foreign and domestic policies. A first-generation Cuban-American raised in Miami, Florida, she is fluent in Spanish and provides political commentary for Univision, Telemundo, CNN en Español and national Spanish radio. Additionally, she was the White House director of specialty media under President George W. Bush.

Mercedes is married to Matt Schlapp, chairman of The American Conservative Union and former political director for President George W. Bush.
